The Jacksonville-Baldwin Trail is a Rails-to-Trails conversion that is west of Jacksonville and outside the beltway. The eastern terminus of the trail is just about 2 miles off of I-295 on Commonwealth Ave. The exit is in the midst of commerical and industrial setting, but as soon as you get to Imeson Rd, you have hit country. The trailhead is about a 1/2 mile north on Imeson off of Commonwealth. This is the stretch of the trail that has the power lines right next to the trail. Our plan is NOT to start from this point.
The western terminus of the trail is further west of the community of Baldwin. So on Sunday, we will be exiting the I-295 beltway and onto I-10 west for about 15 miles to the U.S. 301 exit. Turning right at the end of the ramp to go north on 301, within a few blocks we intersect U.S. 90 which is running east-west, just like I-10. We will turn left onto U.S. 90 for a short distance (about 2 miles) until we reach a road on the right called Brandy Branch Road. We turn right and go less than a 1,000 feet and the trail head is on the right. From this trailhead, there is approximately 11 miles of wooded c ycling except for the short section going through Baldwin. There is a short section of the trail that is situated at the end of a U.S. Naval Air Station runway. This is an active base. After the initial 11 miles, the powelines follow the north side of the trail in a mix of wooded acreage and residential sites for the remaining ride to the Imeson Rd trailhead. Based on the aerial views and written descriptions, a good portion of the trail is canopied.
